Grading

Is the track “easy”, “moderate”, or “challenging”? Find out about my extremely non-scientific grading system.

Easy

Easy tracks can be accomplished by any frontcountry tramper. Tracks are friendly and easy to follow. You can likely bring children on these walks—all you need is a good attitude.
Example: Butterfly Creek

Moderate

Moderately tracks require attention underfoot. They may be tiring but are achievable by most frontcountry trampers. Days may be long but not unduly technical. If tracks are technical, this will only be for short bursts.
Example: Cone Hut via Reeves and Tutuwai or Waiopehu Hut

Challenging

Challenging trips may go off marked tracks, although there may be cairns or waratahs. They may be rough underfoot with roots, rocks, mud, or scrub. They may follow exposed sections and require navigational skills in bad weather. These are not “family friendly” but nor are they the “rough and tumble” hardcore trips at your local tramping club!
Example: Taranaki Maunga and Kapakapanui
