The once-dilapidated Cone Hut (1946) has been faithfully restored to its original totara slab construction, thanks to Tararua Tramping Club and the Department of Conservation. It feels as though little has changed in 70 years, and quiet Cone retains its quaint and simple charm.
The track to Cone starts in spectacular fashion, crossing a swing bridge 40m above the green waters of the Waiohine. Turn left and head uphill. It’s somewhat gruelling, so catch your breath at the top before meandering along the ridge for 90 minutes. Take the first left and drop down to Cone.
The tiny step to the hut door is perfect for removing boots from tired legs. Inside you are greeted with the warm smell of wood smoke. There isn’t much to it – a bench, fireplace and bunk. Back outside, light dapples through towering rimu and totara. A well-worn table under the podocarps provides the ideal spot for tucker before turning in for a good night’s sleep.
Cone Hut is a beautiful place to escape to. It can easily be visited as an overnight trip or loop with Totara Flats – a hut to which Cone is a ready contrast. Cone is often overlooked in favour of Tutuwai, so there’s a good chance you’ll have this wee gem to yourself.
