Āpiti’s hidden cave

Āpiti Limestone Reserve is a hidden corner of the Manawatū. Even in peak holiday season, we were the only ones at this place. The area is under the protection of the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust.

The walk is very short – just 1 kilometre – and easy. From the carpark, descend steeply to Limestone Creek. Cross over and head upstream. You will find yourself in a lush, bushy area.

A waterfall appears on your left and the limestone cave is straight ahead of you. From here, be prepared to get your feet wet! Walk through the cave, ideally with a torch, admiring the geological formations and the odd glow worm. At the east end of the cave is a light shaft – but continue upstream and you’ll soon reach a beautiful chasm.

The loop track used to pass through here but has been blocked off by a slip that has brought down large trees. Return the way you came.
