Our Culinary Advisor says….
Before getting into the recipes, I want to get something out of the way. And that is to answer anyone who wants to know: ‘Should I go buy some dehy food, like Backcountry Cuisine?’
My question to you is: ‘Does your trip involve elite multiday mountain running or high alpine mountaineering?’
If your answer is yes, then congrats. Go get those powder-in-a-bag meals. Grab a Jetboil – or cheap knockoff – while you’re at it. Jetboil + dehy is a match made in heaven when you need to use every bit of your energy and time for whatever extreme physical activity you’re doing. Food = fuel. There are good local brands out there – even local dehy for the vegetarians.
If you are still reading, I assume your answer is no. Welcome to our world! Frontcountry Tramper is all about savouring and sharing the experience. It makes sense that this extends to mealtime.
And it is my humble opinion that this is best based around something other than individual serves of powder in a bag.
It’s easier to do proper cooking in the front country than you might think. Full disclosure here—it’s pretty standard for my backcountry buddies to pick up most of our food at the supermarket on the way out of town. After all, if it’s simple enough to cook over a gas stove over a billy, it’s gotta be pretty simple!
My backcountry buddies have shared plenty of good food over the years. And we don’t eat goddamn Backcountry Cuisine.
